In the third quarter of 2023, the social networking app landscape on iOS in Russia showed dynamic trends in downloads, revenue, and active user engagement. Below, we provide a closer look at the performance of the top 5 apps in this category, based on data from Sensor Tower.

Telegram Messenger from Telegram FZ-LLC saw significant revenue growth, peaking at approximately $426K in the final week of September. Downloads fluctuated throughout the quarter, with a notable dip to around 71K in early September before rising to about 85K by the end of the month. Weekly active users remained relatively stable, increasing slightly from 29.3M to 29.5M.

Threads, an Instagram app, launched by Instagram, Inc., experienced a sharp decline in downloads after an initial surge, dropping from 250K in the second week of July to around 32K by the end of September. Active users peaked at approximately 328K in late August before settling at 167K in the final week of the quarter.

WhatsApp Messenger maintained a steady download rate, with a peak of approximately 136K in late July. Despite a slight decline in downloads toward the end of the quarter, weekly active users remained consistent, hovering around 16.2M.

VK: social network, messenger from V Kontakte OOO showed robust revenue performance, peaking at about $576K in the third week of August. Downloads remained stable, averaging around 60K per week. The app's weekly active users increased from 11.3M to 11.4M over the quarter.

VK Messenger: Live chat, calls also by V Kontakte OOO, saw a dramatic spike in downloads, reaching approximately 125K in late August. Active users grew significantly from 1.2M to 1.4M throughout the quarter, indicating a strong uptake in user engagement.
